Taking Care of Covenants

The Bible, God’s book, addresses humanity’s flaws, prompting repentance and daily mercy. The perfect covenant of Jesus can be broken, especially in a connected world where we see others’ shortcomings. We can accept sins to be normal and backslide into a grave sin.

Isaiah 24:5 - The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

It looks as if God is broken-hearted “2” because we hated “4” our everlasting covenant “5”.

We already know that man can often times fall short of fulfilling covenants and we backslide into sin. Most of the time, we are caught unaware and suddenly we might slip into a small sin or become lax with rules that we place upon ourselves. We then wrestle with God because we feel that we have been so faithful and then we come into temptation and we think that the momentary weakness is forgivable or we could get away without repentance. As much as it pains me to say this, that context is wrong. Unawareness is a sign of loss of control and without repentance, we could find ourselves letting go of simple sins.

This is not to say that we should never sin, on the contrary, it should serve as a reminder of the goodness and mercy that is given to us daily. Just because we are broken people in a broken world, does not mean that we could just go around and break our covenant. Though the work on the cross was the perfection of faith, we must remember that covenants, even everlasting ones, can be broken. Thus, we must be vigilant and remain faithful as God and Jesus were faithful with us.
